The Next Generation Consensus Protocol

Ouroboros Leios represents a fundamental breakthrough in blockchain throughput. By separating the concerns of block validation, transaction inclusion, and consensus finality, Leios achieves massive parallelization without compromising security.

How Leios Works

Input Blocks: Lightweight blocks containing only transaction references, produced at high frequency by many validators in parallel.

Endorsement Blocks: Aggregate and validate input blocks, creating a second layer of parallel processing.

Ranking Blocks: The traditional Praos-style blocks that provide final ordering and consensus, referencing endorsed input blocks.

This three-tier architecture allows transaction throughput to scale independently of consensus finality, dramatically increasing total network capacity.

Research Status: Ouroboros Leios has been peer-reviewed and published. Active development and simulations are ongoing, with the goal of bringing this breakthrough to Cardano mainnet. When combined with Hydra Layer 2, the total network capacity becomes effectively unlimited for most real-world applications.

Fast Finality Without Sacrificing Security

Peras introduces a voting mechanism on top of Praos to achieve faster settlement finality. Instead of waiting for probabilistic finality over many blocks, validators can vote to "boost" blocks, making them irreversible much sooner.

Current Cardano needs ~2,160 blocks (~12 hours) for probabilistic finality. Peras can achieve settlement in minutes through stake-weighted voting.

Stake-Based Threshold Multisignatures

Mithril enables lightweight clients to trustlessly verify the Cardano blockchain state without downloading the full chain. This cryptographic primitive opens up entirely new use cases and dramatically improves user experience.

How It Works: Mithril uses stake-weighted threshold signatures where a qualified majority of stake pool operators sign a message. The resulting signature is compact (constant size regardless of signers) and can be verified by anyone. This creates trustless proofs of Cardano state backed by the same security as block production.
