Ouroboros Leios

Ouroboros Leios represents a fundamental breakthrough in blockchain throughput. By separating the concerns of block validation, transaction inclusion, and consensus finality, Leios achieves massive parallelization without compromising security.
How Leios Works
Input Blocks: Lightweight blocks containing only transaction references, produced at high frequency by many validators in parallel.
Endorsement Blocks: Aggregate and validate input blocks, creating a second layer of parallel processing.
Ranking Blocks: The traditional Praos-style blocks that provide final ordering and consensus, referencing endorsed input blocks.
This three-tier architecture allows transaction throughput to scale independently of consensus finality, dramatically increasing total network capacity.
Performance Targets
Research Status: Ouroboros Leios has been peer-reviewed and published. Active development and simulations are ongoing, with the goal of bringing this breakthrough to Cardano mainnet. When combined with Hydra Layer 2, the total network capacity becomes effectively unlimited for most real-world applications.
Ouroboros Peras
RESEARCHFast Finality Without Sacrificing Security
Peras introduces a voting mechanism on top of Praos to achieve faster settlement finality. Instead of waiting for probabilistic finality over many blocks, validators can vote to "boost" blocks, making them irreversible much sooner.
Faster Settlement
Current Cardano needs ~2,160 blocks (~12 hours) for probabilistic finality. Peras can achieve settlement in minutes through stake-weighted voting.
Security Preserved
Peras maintains all existing security guarantees. If voting fails or is disrupted, the system gracefully falls back to standard Praos finality.
Bridge Enabling
Fast finality is critical for cross-chain bridges. Peras enables secure, efficient bridges to other ecosystems without long confirmation waits.
Mithril
LIVEStake-Based Threshold Multisignatures
Mithril enables lightweight clients to trustlessly verify the Cardano blockchain state without downloading the full chain. This cryptographic primitive opens up entirely new use cases and dramatically improves user experience.
Current Applications
- ● Fast Sync: New nodes can sync the full blockchain state in minutes instead of hours, using cryptographic proofs signed by stake pool operators.
- ● Light Wallets: Mobile and browser wallets can verify state without trusting a central server, maintaining trustlessness with minimal resources.
- ● Transaction Snapshots: Certified snapshots of UTXOs and other chain data for efficient querying and verification.
Future Roadmap
- ● Cardano Transactions: Certify individual transactions for lightweight verification in bridges and Layer 2 solutions.
- ● Cross-Chain Proofs: Enable other blockchains to verify Cardano state without running a full node.
- ● Governance Voting: Certify governance voting results for efficient on-chain verification.
How It Works: Mithril uses stake-weighted threshold signatures where a qualified majority of stake pool operators sign a message. The resulting signature is compact (constant size regardless of signers) and can be verified by anyone. This creates trustless proofs of Cardano state backed by the same security as block production.
